Centraal Museum Utrecht

Vincent van Gogh frequently travelled to Utrecht to visit friends and family, including the artist Anthon van Rappard, whose studio was in the city. In 1877, Vincent wrote to his brother Theo: ‘In Utrecht I saw the cathedral, another old church and the Academy building, it’s very like the Cloisters by Westminster Abbey’. And to Van Rappard, he reported: ‘I’m sure there are beautiful courtyards and alleys in Utrecht too’. At the time, he could have had no idea that his and Van Rappard’s art would one day be on display at a museum in Utrecht: the Centraal Museum. Housed in a building surrounding an exquisite enclosed garden, this city museum – the oldest of its kind in the Netherlands – displays works from an extensive collection of visual arts, city history, design and fashion. The museum often exhibits paintings and prints by Vincent van Gogh from the multifaceted Van Baaren Collection, such as Undergrowth and Still Life with an Earthen Bowl and Pears. Works by Van Gogh will also feature in the opening of the new collection presentation in the second half of 2023. Until then, view all of the works by Vincent van Gogh and Anthon van Rappard on the website: www.centraalmuseum.nl.
